One of the most original artists of the post-war period, Carla Accardi is to be considered one of the greatest exponents of Italian abstractionism. The systematic research and exaltation of sign-colour has characterised her artistic personality for over half a century. The continuous development of her work led her to go beyond the flat surface of painting: she invented spatial forms made of sheets of sicofoil on which the traces of colour unfolded transparently in a relationship between work and space. This gave way in the 1970s to the “Tende”: real structures that could be lived in and walked through. Other materials were experimented with in the 1980s: rough canvases on which layers of colour leaked in varying intensities. Her research has continued over the decades, distinguishing the artist for her creativity and consistency. The large dimensions and strong, decisive colours bear witness to the constant strength of her painting. Numerous exhibitions around the world have established her as an artist of international standing.
